BETTING IN CLASS
When I was young child, I thought that basketball betting was something only adults did. I always wanted to try it, but I didn’t exactly know the details about it and I was too embarrassed to ask. It wasn’t until I was almost 13 that I was finally able to take part in one. All the college teams were competing for the championship in the March Madness tournament in 2007. My teacher came into school one morning waving a stack of papers in the air. She told all the students that we were going to fill out a bracket for the basketball games coming up, and she explained how it worked, the winner won event tickets to the big game. There was a large number of teams and we had to choose who we thought would win. Whoever got the most correct when the championship ended was the winner. I was thrilled then but the excitement grew when she mentioned the next step. Instead of betting money like the adults did, we were going to bet ice cream! The deal was that whoever won was treated to ice cream by the rest of the class. If there was a tie, the entire class sponsored for whoever tied together. I filled it out, but the winner turned out to be the teacher herself! I was a little disappointed, but I still enjoyed the experience, and I look back at the time as a happy one.
